Athens and Kassel I
Athens and Kassel are documenta-14-siblings. So you get the possibility
- to trace the development of works of art (e.g. "The Round-up Projekt: Kokkinia" by Mary Zygouri)
- to experience the same work of art at two different places (e.g "When Elephants Fight, It Is the Frogs That Suffer" by Ben Patterson)
- to witness works of art which connect the two places

The Museum of the Kokkinia Blockade is situated in the municipality of Nikaia, a suburban district near Piraeus. The museum commemorates a massacre on August 17, 1944, when German Nazi troops executed 74 members of the Greek Resistance. Refering to that history and the present crisis, the Greek artist Mary Zygouri works together with pupils and with other inhabitants from the neighbourhood. The pupils are part of a performance. Old men perform music. Zygouri and her team run a long time project which reasearches the historical incident of 1944 and a related performance of 1979. The project is meant to improve the present situation in this area wich was always the home of refugees. The results of this collaborative and social project are shown in installations, in a performance and in a film.
I know this project from Athens. In Kassel you can see the video of the project in Palais Bellevue. Streams of red colour, red hues occur in the video. That reminds me to the Orgies Mysterien Theater by Hermann Nitsch. I watch the video. Then I sit down on the floor in the room and I paint an abstract water colour.

Athens and Kassel II
Athens is new. In Kassel, the documenta team can use established structures. The team charges an open door in Kassel. In Athens everything had to be reinvented. Athens is new to the audience, too. The museums are new. The places in the city are new. In Kassel many places are well-known. The documenta in Athens was different, unaccustomed. The documenta in Kassel is much morer familiar.
